Ghana has a population of approx. 20 million, spread across ten
administrative regions. English is the official language; however,
one can count 40 to 50 different local languages and dialects.
The main religious groupings are: Christians 43%, Muslims 12%,
Traditional 45%. In recent times there has been a great upsurge
of spiritual churches.
The Catholic Church is very vibrant, with 18 dioceses and about
15 percent of the total population.
OLA Sisters have been in Ghana since 1883 and since those early
missions Irish OLAs have continued to be a part of the OLA Ghana
story. With the growth of Ghanaian vocations, Ghana formed its
own Province in 1996. Today there are 41 Ghanaian OLAs and success
of the OLA presence in Ghana can be witnessed in the number of
Ghanaian OLA sisters currently working in different parts of the
world, in Nigeria, Tanzania, Argentina.
Irish Sisters continue to work alongside their Ghanaian counterparts
in a wide range of activities including education, medical and
social.
