I was born in Shepperton, Castlehaven,West Cork.
After Primary School I went to the Convent of Mercy Secondary
School and then entered Ardfoyle Convent where I later completed
my Secondary education. After my First Vows I was sent to England
to train as a teacher. Having qualified as a teacher I was sent to
Northern Nigeria in West Africa.
I taught for 16 years in the new secondary school there.
It was the first Girls’ Secondary School in Northern Nigeria.
My companion teachers were Srs Peter Coyle, Sr. Comgall Milligan and Johanna McCarthy.
Next I was appointed to Western Nigeria, to Ibadan
where I taught Home Economics for 5 years. During that time
I got involved in Health care in the surrounding rural areas.
Also in Adult Literacy Classes for the Women. Some of Class 4
students came with me and took part in the Literacy Classes
helping me to help the women – translating and teaching too.
They also helped in the health classes making sure the mothers
realized the importance of clean water and a balanced diet for the children.
In the 70s The Ministry of Education in Nigeria took over the running of the Schools.
I then went into parish Work full time in The Mid West,
in The Diocese of Benin. I helped to set up Basic Christian Communities.
I found that very rewarding and demanding too. It was greatly appreciated
by the people. That work spread rapidly and there were more and more B.C.C.
Eventually after 45 years in Nigeria I retired to Ireland.
I would have liked to continue with these basic Christian Communities for the rest of my life!
