On 6 September 2025, the Ardfoyle community came together with family and friends to celebrate the 70th Jubilee of Sr Mary Rita O’Mahony. A Cork native, born in 1934, she entered the OLA community in 1953 and made her first profession two years later.
For 62 of those years, Sr Mary Rita lived and worked in Ghana. In Cape Coast, Kenyasi, and Vroom, she taught in schools, served as principal, trained teachers, and accompanied OLA postulants in their first steps toward religious life. She also worked closely with local schools and hospitals, and was a strong advocate for the education of girls.
Her studies at University College Cork, where she earned a BA and a Higher Diploma in Education, prepared her well for her teaching and administrative roles. But her influence went beyond the classroom. Generations of students, colleagues, and sisters remember her not only for her skill as a teacher, but also for the steady support she offered in community and parish life.
The Jubilee gathering in Ardfoyle was both a celebration and a moment of gratitude for Sr Mary Rita who gave her life so fully to Ghana, and for the many relationships formed along the way.
Yedase Sister, Nyame nhyira wo pii ÂÂ- thank you, and may God continue to watch over you.
