We are overjoyed to announce that our Congregational Leader, Sr. Mary Barron, has been appointed as a member of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, specifically in the Section for First Evangelisation and New Particular Churches. This wonderful news was shared by Pope Francis on June 8, 2024, and it brings immense joy to all of us as Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles.

Sr. Mary Barron, a Donegal woman, has dedicated her life to evangelisation, Her missionary work in Nigeria and Tanzania has been profound, involving diverse pastoral activities, youth work, women’s empowerment, and coordination of HIV and AIDS projects. With fifteen years of leadership experience within our congregation, Sr. Mary has passionately promoted inter-congregational initiatives, fostering collaboration and unity among us.

In addition to her work within our congregation, Sr. Mary has served as a joint coordinator of a mission animation project in Ireland and has held key roles in SEDOS (Service of Documentation and Study on Global Mission) in Rome, where she currently serves as President. In 2019, she was elected to the Executive Board of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), becoming its President in September 2023.

Reflecting on her new role, Sr. Mary said, “I was surprised but delighted to be nominated as a Member of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, Section for First Evangelisation and New Particular Churches. I hold it as a great honour both for the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) and for my own congregation, the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA).”

We share Sr. Mary’s sentiments and recognise the significance of this appointment. She expressed, “This new nomination inspires a deep sense of gratitude in me, as it recognises female missionaries and the contributions we make to the Missio Dei.”

This appointment is particularly meaningful as we prepare to celebrate our 150th anniversary, reflecting on our rich history closely linked to Propaganda Fide. It also aligns with the Church’s journey towards a more synodal expression, highlighting the central role of women in the authentic expression of the Church today.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sr. Mary Barron on this well-deserved appointment. Her leadership, vision, and dedication continue to inspire and strengthen the mission of evangelisation across the globe. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to supporting her in this role.
