Africa Climate Week (ACW) is an annual gathering that unites leaders from governments, businesses, international organisations, and civil society to tackle the pressing issue of climate change. This year’s event, ACW 2023, is particularly noteworthy, as it takes place from September 4th to 8th in Nairobi, Kenya, and coincides with the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) from September 4th to 6th, both hosted by the Government of Kenya. Care for Creation is a core value for us, as OLA Sisters Irish Province, and we are delighted that Irish Minister for Environment, Eamonn Ryan will be among the attendees. ACW 2023 presents a crucial opportunity to contribute to the global effort in addressing climate change.

ACW 2023 also serves as a critical precursor to the UN Climate Change Conference COP 28 in Dubai and the inaugural Global Stocktake, designed to pave the way for achieving the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. This regional event emphasises the importance of localised solutions to global climate challenges.

ACW 2023 will encompass four distinct tracks, each focusing on specific themes:

  1. Energy Systems and Industry: Exploring sustainable practices within the energy sector.
  2. Cities, Urban and Rural Settlements, Infrastructure, and Transport: Addressing the role of urban planning and transport in reducing emissions.
  3. Land, Ocean, Food, and Water: Examining the interplay of ecosystems and resources in the climate crisis.
  4. Societies, Health, Livelihoods, and Economies: Highlighting the impact of climate change on human well-being and economic stability.

The organisation of ACW 2023 is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Bank. It also receives invaluable support from regional partners, including the African Union (AU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the African Development Bank (ADB).

As the world grapples with the mounting challenges posed by climate change, we, the OLA  Sisters remain steadfast in our commitment to Care for Creation. We look forward to contributing to the vital conversations around Climate Justice through our annual Intergenerational Climate Conference on October 26th, a collaborative effort with the Society of African Missions (SMAs) and other partners who share our commitment to environmental stewardship. Details will be shared in the next week.
